How to Wear Leather Leggings After Age 50

When I was in college I had a leather mini skirt from Wilson’s at the mall. This was probably the epitome of late 1980s and early 1990s fashion. It was my go to “going out” skirt. I wish I had kept this skirt for my daughters!

Fast forward and I have a few staple leather pieces in my closet… two are from LOFT. (LOFT has great sales and is one of my go to stores if I am not thrifting.) I’ve worn my LOFT faux leather leggings and pants on repeat the past few years. I wore them recently with a black sleeveless top, a long taupe thrifted sweater and fun Dr. Scholl’s slip on sneakers, a favorite from Amazon. And leopard is my favorite print!

SPANX has incredibly popular faux leather leggings as well.

Faux leather leggings or jeans (these KUT from the Kloth high-rise jeans are amazing) are a fun staple if you want to update your closet beyond the usual black leggings or jeans.

If you’re over 50 like me you might think these are “too much” but trust me, they are not!

And if you are petite (I am 5 ft. 1), consider purchasing faux leather joggers for an updated look. These have pockets!

Here are 5 ways to style faux leather leggings for over age 50 (but that are great at any age).

Faux Leather Leggings With a Tunic Sweater or Top

I prefer longer tops with leggings that cover my butt! Love this all black chic look from Cyndi Spivey, one of my favorite over 50 fashion influencers.

Faux Leather Leggings with a Graphic T-shirt

I love this casual look, especially for a concert or weekends. Add a few fun graphic t-shirts to your closet this year to update your style. They also look great with blazers for casual Friday! I ordered and love this J Crew Factory Brooklyn DUMBO t-shirt and have paired it with a faux leather midi skirt and black Adidas. It’s a great longer length t-shirt that you can tie in the front and leave longer in the back! Below is a great look from Dana Berez. It would look cute with black moto boots or metallic sneakers.

If you don’t have a graphic t-shirt in your closet, consider adding a fun one that pays tribute to your favorite music. You can’t go wrong with Dolly! I’m an 80s girl so I also love a shout out to 80s pop culture such as this MTV tshirt.

Faux Leather Leggings with a Classic White Blouse

One of my favorite over 50 bloggers to follow on Instagram is 50 is Not Old. The older I get the more difficult it is to find bloggers or Instagrammers over 50! I love how she used this beautiful vibrant pink (one of my favorites) to really make her outfit pop! When it’s warmer out you could lose the scarf and wear a chunky beaded necklace and sandals in a fun color.

Faux Leather Leather Leggings with a Belted Blouse

I love this look of faux leather leggings paired with a belted long print blouse and suede ankle boots for another dressier look. Outfit inspo via Fabulous After 40.

Faux Leather Leggings with a Longer Sleeveless Top

Faux leather leggings aren’t just for fall or winter! Wear them in warmer weather with a longer sleeveless top and sandals or sneakers for an updated casual look with edge. Here I am wearing mine with a black shell blouse from LOFT (which I ordered in white once I realized how versatile it was and how comfy the fabric was.) Here’s a similar tunic length sleeveless top from Amazon that would look great with a chain necklace.

Hesitant about buying faux leather leggings or jeans? Take the plunge! Even Martha Stewart is wearing leather pants!
