Old School Blogging: What We’re Up To!

Mardis Gras Pooch

When we get snowed in slash iced in we do crazy things like dress up the dogs in Mardi Gras beads and boas…good times!

It’s been a while since I really wrote an old school blog post (remember those?) about what my family is up to so I thought I’d share a few updates.

First of all, our baby girl Miss A is going to be starting middle school in August. Yes, let’s just let that sink in for a bit. MIDDLE SCHOOL. We’ll have two middle schoolers at home this fall. Now 5th grade for us in Metro Nashville public schools officially means the start of middle school and don’t get me started on how I think that is way too damn early. We toured a magnet school last month and really loved it but we’re on the wait list so both girls may or may not be at the same school in the fall. I sense a lot of car pooling finessing in my future if Miss A does get into the magnet school.

Miss A has been enrolled in A Novel Idea’s Pen & Paper Club this school year and she absolutely loves it. Her group meets weekly and it’s been perfect for her amazing writing talent. If your child loves creative writing, I highly recommend it. I will never forget her fall teacher, J’Laine Vest, an amazing creative soul who lost her life too early. My last conversation with her was one of positivity and encouragement about Miss A’s writing ability and I will treasure this poem written by Miss A (which J’Laine handed to me that afternoon) forever.

Speaking of car pooling, Miss C just made middle school track and is back on the soccer fields this spring after breaking her ankle last fall. I’m a big advocate of kids playing sports. I was never athletic as a kid and more of the always chosen last in P.E. sidelines kid but if your kid has a particular talent or love for a sport, I say go for it! Just be prepared to log a lot of hours driving to and from games and practices.

Spring break is this month and Miss C is flying solo for the first time ever and will be visiting my sister in Tampa. I’m excited for her! We may take a quick weekend trip to Chattanooga at some time during the break, as well, although all this crazy winter weather in Nashville is chipping away at snow days and more ice and snow is in the forecast for this evening. Mama needs to make a faux wine run (yes in other news I gave up wine for Lent…and not I’m not Catholic or crazy!) I gave up drinking about 5 years ago for Lent and it was a great way to detox before spring, not to mention shed a few pounds of winter weight.

So, that’s about it for our little corner of the world. I have been decluttering the house like crazy and some of that was inspired after seeing how much work it took to settle my stepmom’s estate and get my dad moved into an apartment last fall. We humans love our STUFF. I’m also working on some cool projects at work and occasionally writing for The A Group blog, doing a little freelance work on the side, and enjoying serving on the boards of Femfessionals Nashville and Every Girl Counts, which is set to open Hope Academy very soon!

What’s going on in your world? Do your kids take track? I’m curious to learn more about it as we are track newbies.
