5 Fun Family Winter Indoor Activities

Baby it’s cold outside! When winter weather prohibits you and your family from getting out and playing outside, there are some fun alternatives to simply zoning out by the light of a video game or TV screen.

The next time your kids come down with a case of the “I’m Boreds,” just whip out these ideas for indoor family activities. If you’re like me, you can NEVER remember all the great ideas you have filed away to banish boredom. I call that “momnesia.” The other nice thing is that most of these suggestions are free or fairly inexpensive.

Five Winter Family Indoor Activities

Classic Board Game Night
Break out the classics, from Scrabble to Monopoly to Yahtzee, and relive some of your own childhood board game favorites. Pop some popcorn, make some hot chocolate and get ready to roll your dice and build your board game empire. My girls got Life and Clue for Christmas and it was so nice to sit down to a good old-school board game over winter break.

Jigsaw Puzzle Table
Choose a large jigsaw puzzle that the entire family can sit down and tackle together and make it an ongoing winter project. Leave it out on your game room or playroom table and set a designated puzzle night. I LOVED working on jigsaw puzzles when I was a kid.

Roller Baby
I grew up in the era of weekends spent at the roller skating rink, especially for the kids who lived “in town” (I was actually a country girl). Not only is roller skating fantastic exercise, it’s just plain fun and you’ll have a few flashbacks to your own childhood when they crank up the Hokey Pokey and announce couples skate while Journey plays.

Cooking Decorating Party
Remember how fun it was to decorate Christmas cookies together as a family? Get ready to roll (your cookie dough, that is) and bake up a batch of winter theme sugar cookies. Stock up on fun sprinkles and icing and get creative with snowflake designs, snowmen, and more.

Cosmic Bowling
Anyone can go bowling, but have you ever tried cosmic bowling? It’s great fun for the entire family and gets the competitive blood flowing! Of course, regular bowling is always a blast, too.

We need a board game upgrade at our house. Chutes & Ladders doesn’t really cut it anymore! But I love the idea of jigsaw puzzles. I did a ton of them when I was a kid too. I even got nostalgic looking at all of the puzzles at Barnes & Noble yesterday! Should have bought one!
