The Road Less Traveled

This morning after a delicious breakfast outside at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel, one of those breakfasts that makes you wonder why you don’t sit outside and enjoy your coffee each morning more often and then you remember it’s because usually you have all of about 2 minutes to suck down your coffee while grabbing your purse, keys, and children, I remembered that one of the guests at dinner last night mentioned the hotel was a short walk to the Torrey Pines Gliderport overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

I glanced at the time. I had less than 40 minutes to print my boarding pass at the hotel business center and take a quick walk. I could make it there and back in time to catch my 8:45 airport shuttle. I hadn’t been to the San Diego area in 10 years and I wasn’t going to miss the chance to at least get a glance of the Pacific.

The air was cooler and thick with moisture and it was overcast. I walked to the rear of the hotel property and cut through a parking lot where a security guard pointed me in the right direction. Not many people were out, but as I headed up a small rise behind a modern building I could see SUVs lining the street and people out walking their dogs toward the bluff. The landscape changed slightly to sandier terrain and the horizon was clear so I knew I was getting close.

Finally I saw it. I walked toward the beginning of a trail that meanders down the bluff that is frequented by local surfers. I stood and enjoyed the view and snapped a few photos, knowing full well I looked every part the tourist dressed in jeans, and whipping my camera out of my purse, already overloaded with a book I was planning on reading on the flight home.

I had to jog back part of the way so I wouldn’t be late for the shuttle, especially once I realized that I had to circle around the entire hotel property to the front lobby entrance because I’d already turned in my room key, but the view was worth it.

I can be set in my ways and jaded so many times, encumbered with the stress of everyday life. I don’t want to forget that deep down inside I’m still a girl who will take an impromptu detour that leaves me breathless.

Headed To California

I’ve been invited to a couple of automotive industry social media events now and I was thrilled to receive an invite to Honda’s Ride n’ Drive event unveiling the 2011 Odyssey later this week, even if I am not a minivan mama. The first car that the hubby and I sat down together to buy shortly after getting married was a white Honda Civic.  It was the car he navigated down rainy side streets at 3 a.m. to Baptist Hospital in downtown Nashville when I was in labor with Miss C back in 2002. We no longer have the Civic, but he drove it until it had more than 150,000 miles.

I’ll be staying in La Jolla, which is just beautiful this time of year and I look at the Weather Channel forecast for this week and fantasize that it’s this way all year because it’s this time of summer when I long to escape the heat and humidity of Middle Tennessee. I’ve been to San Diego once pre-kids (are you detecting a mama used to travel before gettin’ knocked up pattern?) and it’s gorgeous.

Yesterday I received a followup email saying that myself and the 10 other women bloggers invited to this week’s Ride n’ Drive will be attending Variety magazine’s Power of Women luncheon in Beverly Hills Sept. 30! Looking at photos from last year I couldn’t help but get excited. The guests included such power house women in entertainment as Christina Applegate, Christina Aguilera, and Sigourney Weaver. Even though I live in Nashville it’s not like I am mingling with the stars on a daily basis. Or. Ever. I mean my day to day life is pretty darn ordinary: school, work, soccer, homework, housework, and trying to figure out what the heck to make for dinner. Now I’m wondering what the heck to wear to a red carpet luncheon in Beverly Hills!

Honda asked those of us attending the Ride n’ Drive event to define what the Power of Women means to us. Our essays are featured on the Honda Odyssey Facebook page.

The first thing that came to mind was the influence of women as mentors and peers in my girls’ lives. I also believe strongly in the power that my girls can find within themselves.

I would be honored if you’d consider voting for my essay! Voting ends at 8:59 p.m. Thursday PDT.

Everyone had great insights to share. The two voters receiving the most votes will be Red Carpet correspondents at the Sept. 30 event in Beverly Hills!

p.s. I decided last week to launch a Facebook page for Blonde Mom Blog. I have a personal page, but I keep it fairly locked down since I post a lot of photos, but I would LOVE it if you’d also “like” my blog Facebook page! I have so many additional notes and video I shoot from trips, it will be a great place for fans of my blog to connect and get some behind-the scenes looks at what I’m up to.
