Haiti: How To Help

I wanted to take a quick break from my usual posts and mention a few ways that you can help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

There are many celebrities rallying to spread the word on ways to help, including Ben Stiller and Lance Armstrong, who were already working in Haiti on a charitable project together. Just this morning I read that Angelina Jolie and Brat Pitt have donated $1 million for relief in Haiti.

So you don’t have $1 million to donate…what can you do?

Hip hop artist Wyclef Jean, a Haitian immigrant, led a huge charitable push on Twitter yesterday. Donate $5 to his Haitian charity, Yéle Haiti, by texting “YELE” to 501501.

You can also text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti.

Save the Children has a donation page on their website…you can donate as little as $10, which would be a great way for children to make a small donation.

I know I have readers from across the United States, but many of you are also from Nashville. Today’s Tennessean has a good wrap-up of charities (several local) accepting donations to help send aid to Haiti. You can also donate to local Nashville charity Soles 4 Souls: Project Haiti Relief. Soles 4 Souls founder and CEO Wayne Elsey is very active on Twitter. Hope can be as simple as a pair of shoes for someone who is in need or for someone who is aiding in the search and rescue of survivors in the rubble.

No matter what charity you choose, I hope you choose to give!

Pay It Forward Holiday Shopping

I’ve been getting a TON of e-mail requests about various charities this holiday season so I thought I’d highlight a few today.

Mekong Blue Scarves – a beautiful, convenient gift idea that supports and empowers women, mothers, and children.

Mekong Blue scarves are hand-woven of 100% silk by women in Cambodia who are working to fight poverty, illiteracy and a brutal sex-trade for themselves and their children. Former St. David’s Episcopal Church minister Ann Walling has led the U.S. launch of these scarves here in Nashville. As a mother and grandmother Ann was touched by this cause. With the support of Ann’s family foundation, Mekong Blue scarves are available online at www.bluesilk.org and through a store at St. David’s Episcopal Church locally. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these gorgeous scarves goes back to the weavers at SWDC to help employ them so that they and their children may be able to afford to pursue an education and combat the difficult situation in which they live.

Edited to add: This lime green (one of my favorite colors) scarf is my favorite!

Krochet Kids – a charity organization that teaches women in Uganda the art of crocheting to better their lives.

These stylish and handmade hats are much like many of the lead designers hats you would see at department stores or specialty boutiques, but made with so much more meaning behind them. Each hat is handmade by a woman in Uganda and personalized on the tag with a handwritten name. These women, who couldn’t read or write, are now making hats, owning land, reading, writing, and so much more. 100 percent of all proceeds from these amazing hats go directly back to the women who have made them. These hats are one of a kind and are sold online at krochetkids.org

Here’s a neat idea that I have personal experience with…

Kiva.orga micro-lending site whose mission is  to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.

My brother gave me a $50 gift certificate to Kiva a few years ago and it’s a great, non-traditional gift that helps people in need. Kiva is the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend to unique entrepreneurs around the globe. You can help real people around the world, from Rwanda to Nicaragua, launch their own businesses.

As a side note, many bloggers have been rallying these past few weeks to help the family of Anissa Mayhew, a rockin’ funny blog mama from Atlanta with three young children (the youngest of whom was diagnosed with cancer in 2006) who suffered a massive stroke last month. You can read more about Anissa here; her husband Peter has been writing the most incredible updates on how she is slowly but surely making progress. GO ANISSA!  The Paypal link to make donations to help Anissa and her family is here.

One more thing I read about on Nie Nie Dialogues is the story of Emily Jones, a young mother expecting her second child who lost her husband last month in a caving accident. There is a silent auction on A Daily Scoop benefiting Emily but it ends tonight at midnight so go check it out if you get a chance!

Welcome to my Snap Out Of That Turkey Coma, Mama Needs A Brand New Pair of Boots Giveaway!

To celebrate the opening of KEEN’s new online store, I’m hosting a great giveaway for one free item of the winner’s choice from KEEN! You could choose something for yourself. I love the Palermo Mary Janes from the women’s Market St. line:

I also love the Amsterdam pink (imagine that) Mary Janes for my girls:

I heart these toddler boots (me again, with the pink):

For the man in your life, I like the Wear Around Lace in the Torino collection:

They also have a wonderfully hip line of computer bags, day bags, etc. I am loving the Betty Bag, which has a lining made with recycled materials:

For you athletic outdoorsy types KEEN is a familiar brand, but their shoes are also fabulous for those of us (much like myself, cough) who want to look all athletic and Earth mama-esque but who think roughing it is eating a granola bar on a park bench.

You can also feel good about doing your holiday shopping at KEEN because they are donating $5 to local shelters and food banks with each purchase through December 25. KEEN is also donating the proceeds of all Marshall wallets (while supplies last) purchased at keenfootwear.com to 1 KG More, a China-based non profit organization that works to bring school supplies to remote, impoverished areas of China, including those displaced by the May 12 earthquake; they also donated monetary aid and 15,000 pairs of shoes to victims of the earthquake last spring. Doing good is not something, however, KEEN just flashes during the holidays.

To enter the KEEN BlondeMomBlog giveaway simply visit KEEN’s new online store and come back to this post and leave a comment about your favorite, must have item. A random winner will be chosen from all eligible comments left by midnight Thursday, December 4. For an extra entry either post about this giveaway on your own blog or Tweet about it. You don’t need a blog or website to enter but you do need to leave a valid e-mail address so I can contact you, should you win. Thanks and good luck!
