Test Your Dog’s DNA And Adopt a New Furry Friend This Weekend

If you know me and my family, you know that our dogs are a very special part of our family. My husband and I are also huge advocates of pet adoption. Our first “baby” was a Corgi/German Shepherd mix named Bailey adopted from the local Nashville Humane Association and we loved her like crazy. She loved her walks in the park with her daddy, her tennis ball time, and her swimming hole.

I always wondered what Bailey’s background was. She was most definitely some sort of Heinz 57 mix, and as we’ve continued our canine parenting adventures, we’ve acquired a couple more mutts, Zoey and Dapper. We think Zoey has Pinscher in her and Dapper looks to be a cattle dog mix, but we don’t really know and there’s no genealogy service for mutts.

I didn’t realize until recently that you can actually test your dog’s DNA, providing insight on a dog’s specific genetics as well as education on their unique qualities and possible health issues related to their specific breeds. I know, for example, that Daschunds and Corgis tend to have back issues.

Wisdom Panel Canine offers a unique DNA test for dogs and is on tour this year, making a special appearance this weekend in Middle Tennessee at the Mars Pet Care Labor of Love adoption event being held at the Williamson County Animal Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. September 4-5.

Visitors who bring their dogs to the Wisdom Panel booth in Franklin this weekend can purchase a discounted do-it-yourself kit($49.99) that can be done at home. Within three weeks of receipt of the cheek swab test, dog owners will be emailed an official Ancestry Report revealing their dog’s genetic background.

Celebrity pet expert Harrison Forbes will be at the special adoption event in Franklin on Friday, September 4 and Emmy award-winning singer/songwriter Naomi Judd is scheduled to appear from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 5. The American Humane Association’s Red Star Rescue Rig, an 82-foot-long truck fully equipped to handle disasters and on-the-ground rescue services for animals, will also be on site and open for tours.

Mars Petcare will sponsor all adoptions at the center, a PEDIGREE® partner shelter, in an effort to find pets a loving and forever home. There will also be displays and giveaways that will be fun for the entire family. If you’ve been thinking about adopting a dog, this is a great time to visit with some amazing furry friends who need love and a caring home.

The Mars Pet Care tent will be set up and their team will provide adoption goody bags to all adopting families. A Banfield representative will also be on site to help answer any questions about the DNA testing process. Additionally, the Mars Veterinary team will be supplying 12 Wisdom DNA Kits to the Williamson County shelter.
