Disclosure: I participated in this program on behalf of Champions for Kids and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.
Did you know that today more children than ever before get free or reduced price school breakfast? That’s 9.8 million kids. Even more startling to me, is that 10.6 million eligible kids go completely without breakfast during the school week. I can’t imagine my girls trying to learn and study on an empty stomach. Hunger has a huge effect on a child’s school performance; 9 out of 10 teachers say having a healthy breakfast is a key to academic achievement.
I wasn’t familiar with Champions for Kids and their SIMPLE Giving program in conjunction with Kellogg Company and Diamond Foods, but it’s as easy as visiting your local Walmart while you’re out shopping for your family, purchasing breakfast foods, and then donating them to help provide a nutritious start to the day for children in your local schools.
I’ve traveled half way around the world to Kenya to speak with school children in the slums who often go without breakfast so it’s hard for me to believe that there are children in my own community who go without something as basic as breakfast. The Champions for Kids SIMPLE Giving program is such a great community service project to share with your kids. Here in Middle Tennessee there are several area participating Walmart stores, such as those in Nashville, Clarksville, and Murfreesboro.
It can be overwhelming when we think of need in our communities and we aren’t sure just where to start. Sometimes we can become resigned to think that small efforts don’t make a difference. Champions for Kids is a champion of spreading the word that helping others does not have to come in large doses. Instead, Champions for Kids seeks to ignite generational change by fostering a “habit of giving” among youth and parents in America.
How can you help? Simply purchase and donate breakfast food items at your local participating Walmart now through May 5. Place your items in the purple donation bins at the front of the store after checkout. All of the food donations go to children in the local store district so this is a great way to give back to your local community and demonstrate to your children the importance of giving back. The school district that collects the most donated items from a single Walmart store in its division will also receive $10,000 from Champions for Kids. And the school district that collects the most donations from a Walmart store in its region will receive $1,000 from Champions for Kids. Champions for Kids #SIMPLEGiving Twitter Party
The Motherhood is joining Champions for Kids along with Kellogg Company and Diamond Foods for a Twitter party Thursday, April 24 to spread the word about a simple way we can help ensure that kids in our communities enjoy a nutritious breakfast that will help them stay focused in school!
