Nancy Drew, Girl Detective

Nancy Drew Costume

Recipe for a no-spend Nancy Drew costume: Pleated skirt, oxford cloth shirt, cardigan with an N “monogram” (printed from the computer), knee socks, flashlight and handy notebook for clues. I also had a rare Martha moment and made Miss C a Nancy Drew button pinned to the right side of her sweater (which you can’t see in the photo) with a small picture from the cover of Nancy Drew’s first book. I went to Walgreens in search of a magnifying glass but they had clear customizable buttons with pop-out covers on clearance in the picture frames section. That moment of inspiration deserves some sort of mommy badge for creativity, especially since I hadn’t even had a cup of coffee yet.

I know, I know Nancy Drew would probably never wear fuchsia knee socks but Miss C is not a plain white knee sock kind of girl. Besides, pink leopard or peace sign theme knee socks don’t exactly scream girl super sleuth. And trust me, I know screaming. I have two girls.

  1. So cute! Sus was Fancy Nancy, and I had so much fun coming up with the outfit. I’m going to try to post a pic, but I’m not great at getting photos on my blog. :)

I commented that if it were me 30-something years ago, I would have been Nancy Drew.

  2. Jamie says:

Mary I was thrilled with Nancy Drew as she is currently obsessed with Selena Gomez. ;)

She was getting frustrated over ideas and then looked at her bookshelf and said, “Nancy Drew!” (and I was soooo glad)

Oh and I cannot forget her Goosebumps series love. That’s the subject of another post entirely.

  3. Pippi says:

Adorable – this was my FAVORITE series as a little girl. What a great outfit and she is such a cutie pie.

Cool … at school (my daughter’s school) on Monday, in honor of Dr. Suess, there were a bunch of little girls wearing all black, tails attached, crazy hats on. It’s a cute way to get the young ones interested in reading an actuall book :-)

  7. This is so cool! My big girl is very into the Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series right now. Maybe I can get her to consider this for next Halloween. (She was Tinkerbell this year, and at almost-six, probably too old for that costume.)

  8. Jamie says:

My mom saved all of my Nancy Drew books and now Miss C has them in her room. I LOVED them. We have not seen the movie…must remedy that!

  10. Stacia says:

I bet Bess would totally have gone with the fuchsia knee socks. And Nancy would have totally borrowed the idea, you know, to impress Ned while she was apprehending culprits. I can see it.

  11. Seriously Adorable! I loved reading Nancy Drew when I was a kid….still have my old books! :-)
