Do you ever look at your little girl (or little boy, I should add) and have your breath nearly taken away by suddenly seeing them as a teenager?
Nah, me neither.
This was taken a few weeks ago when Miss C had strep throat (I wish I looked this pretty when I was sick) after we had stopped for a treat at a great local toy store. She picked out a pair of five dollar tiny butterfly earrings that fasten with a magnet and paid for them from money she’d earned by doing chores around the house. They give her that sense of being more grown up without the commitment of actual pierced ears.
I know the pierced ears request is just one of many that will pave the way to adolescence. It’s a simple desire to be a little bit more grown up, but signals the beginning of many more complex issues to come.
Right now I’m just hoping I can make it through her kindergarten award ceremony in a few weeks without crying.
Sammie has some of these moments because she has lots of bracelets and necklaces she likes. Our girls don’t have their ears pierced yet either but even with some of her jeans if she cocks her hip to the side, with some sparkly necklace…I see the future too. And it is way too PRETTY. I hope to ugly her up some before middle school or we’re gonna have problems.
When my boys were little I worried more about them, but my girls are worrying me about years we aren’t even to yet. Argh!!

I so hear ya. Why do they have to grow up so fast? Here earrings are very pretty… and my oldest loves clip-ons as well.
She will be starting kindy in August and I just don’t know what I will do… but cry my little heart out hehe while she is looking at me like I am a crazy mom!

OMG, that is so true! Miss C looks SO grown up there.
Right before Easter, I took Tessa (7) to Tar-Jay. She walks in and immediately exclaims, “OMG (saying the letters themselves), I am going to DIE, they have Easter stuff!” What a “tween” thing to say about “little” kid things.
I find I am enjoying the twins more now that they seem to be truly sentient beings. I enjoy the real conversations that their youth didn’t provide.

I am having a lot of the flash forward teenager moments with my 6 year old son. He is constantly asking me questions about love and marriage and recently did his first internet search on this topic—”haw to droll a butt.”
I thought this was very teenagery of him:)

I feel the same way. It’s so scary and overwhelming to realize how fast the teenage years are going to come. I honestly don’t want Ayla to go to Kindergarten. I contemplate home-schooling but don’t think I could handle that either! Can’t Win!!

My girls have been teenagers ever since they were 18 months (that’s when they learned it was fun to slam their bedroom doors, oh yes the joy). I am so sad thinkign of Miss K being in 1st grade next year and in school all day. And both girls act so old with the stuff that say like “That’s so cool” or “Oh no you didn’t!” as Miss K waves her finger around at the same time….lol!

When I listen to my oldest talking to his younger siblings, he sounds so grown up. I am loving the more mature conversations and less hands-on parenting, but it is so bittersweet!

All I can say is, take a ton of pictures, and hug her all the time. I promise it’s going to seem like you blinked and she will be wearing your clothes. I got a phone call from an old boyfriend today who saw my 14 year old daughter (without me) this weekend and said it looked like a mini-me…he knew it was my daughter without having any idea it was my daughter. I have loved every single minute of every single stage in her life, but when I look back at her pictures from kindergarten I want to squeeze that 6 year old again!

I asked my mom for pierced ears repeatedly. She never gave in. I was 23 before I got my ears pierced, and today I’m thankful that I waited so long.
Of course, I got my ears pierced on a boat. In Africa. With a needle.
