Dirty Little Secrets, You Know You’ve Got ‘Em

Have you ever skimmed over words at bedtime just to speed read through story time?

Eaten your kids’ last PopTart?

Lied about the Doodlebops disappearing from TV?

Pumped your kid full of Tylenol and dropped them off at daycare?

Called daycare “school” just to ease your own mommy guilt?

If so, “Dirty Little Secrets from Otherwise Perfect Moms” is the book for you. Written by the moms who brought you “I Was a Perfect Mother Before I Had Kids,” this is a fun collection of page by page “momfessionals” that would make a great Mother’s Day gift (especially with a spa gift card thrown in as a bookmark…ahem.) They interviewed hundreds of moms and found that all mothers have a few skeletons in their closet. Don’t pass this little gem of a book off as a total cream puff, though. Some of the confessions are painfully honest. Many, though, will make you laugh out loud.

As part of the Dirty Little Secrets MotherTalk book tour, MotherTalk is sponsoring a contest at their book club site. Share your own dirty little motherhood secret for a chance to win an Amazon gift certificate. I’ve already shared some of my dirty little secrets above, so go check out the contest.

I agree with Plain Jane Mom, though. I wouldn’t recommend this book for a first time mother. It might scare the hell out of her.

Sounds like a perfect shower gift…just kidding. It sounds like a great seasoned mother’s day gift.

I got that book, hoping for a little fun and validation, but was really, really disappointed. Not in the “confessions” because I so completely feel and do the same things, but because I read it in about 10 minutes. I mean, really. One little paragraph confession per page. In about 24-point type. Neat idea, poor execution.

I was expecting something more like the Vickie Iovine books I so enjoyed during and (even more so) after my pregnancies.

Sigh.

Jen:

That’s a good point.

This book is literally a collection of singular confessions. I read it in one sitting.

So, if you’re looking for something more substantial, this is not it. It’s more of a novel concept type gift book, in my opinion.

p.s. I recently posted another book review for Mother Talk for the Naptime is the New Happy Hour book by Stefanie Wilder-Taylor. That is more along the lines of what you are looking for, if you like Vicki Iovine.

hee-hee. I think I’ve done all of those, except maybe substitute “cookie” for pop tart. Honestly I use to scoff at people who called daycare “school”, but I do it now too. They do learn stuff…even if it is how to hit and bite.

Hi there. Thanks for the post! We wrote this book because the ‘dirty little secrets’ from our first book — “I Was A Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids” — really resonated with so many moms we heard from. Jen, our first book is one we really think you might like — it looks at the issues we all face, from guilt to judgment to the inability to say no to losing our identities, and gives practical tips on how to realign our over the top expectations with reality. Please let us know if you do check it out, we’d love your thoughts.

Cheers!

It’s “nursery school,” not “school.”

“Nursery School” - see how it sounds so sweet and British and kinda retro?

My son goes to a nice nursery school.

Refreshing & Fantastic! Thanks for sharing such a great book - it is my mother’s day gift for all of my mommy friends. I was in need of a good laugh - and a little less guilt knowing others are doing the same thing. Thanks for sharing!

Confession

I had been waiting ten minutes with my one year old in line at the YMCA when this lady this lady cut in front of me and said “you don’t mind you”. Before I could answer she moved ahead, so I went up to the counter right beside her and pinched my daughter who started to scream right in the ladies ear.
